What Are Data Systems?

Data systems are the technology that collects, stores and makes available data that businesses use. Data systems could include the database system (DBMS), warehouses special platforms, such as NoSQL databases, and alternative data storage models like cloud object services. They can also include master data management, which produces a common set of reference data for an organisation and its products, customers or other assets.

The most important characteristics of the data system are volume, variety and velocity. Volume refers the amount of data being processed. It can be massive data sets that are too complicated for a single computer to handle. Variety refers to the many types of data being collected, from traditional sensors, social media feeds and other sources. Velocity refers to the speed at which data flows into and out of the data system.

These four characteristics have spurred the creation of new and innovative data systems. In addition to traditional databases and DBMS technologies there are also new data platforms that can handle a large variety of data.

A big sensor data system, like it is a collection of sensors/devices that gather an array of data from physical devices like smartphones and medical wearable sensors. Sensor data readings may contain signal, location or image data, along with timestamps. The data is then saved on the device, and then transmitted to the central server. The data is then processed to ensure that the resulting data is clear and useful for processing and analysis.
